Wizards of the Coast is expanding the universe of Magic: The Gathering with an ambitious crossover, integrating the rich tapestry of Marvel Comics into its gameplay. The latest addition, Fin Fang Foom, embodies this adventurous spirit, promising a unique blend of strategic gameplay and comic book nostalgia.

Unleash the Dragon: Fin Fang Foom's Epic Entry into the Multiverse!

Unveiling the Strategy Behind Marvel's Latest Magic: The Gathering Integration

The latest Magic: The Gathering set, a collaboration with Marvel Super Heroes, is set to introduce a roster of familiar faces from the comic book universe, including fan favorites like Spider-Man and Captain America, alongside the Avengers and X-Men. However, a key objective for Wizards of the Coast in this ongoing partnership is to shine a spotlight on some of Marvel's more unusual and lesser-known characters. Aaron Mesburne, a senior narrative game designer, revealed that a delightful aspect of this project is discovering opportunities to feature these niche characters. He also mentioned an overarching goal for this multi-year Marvel collaboration: to include at least one 'dragon' in every Marvel-themed set.

The Obvious Choice: Fin Fang Foom's Role in the Marvel Super Heroes Set

For the Marvel Super Heroes set, the choice for the featured dragon was clear: Fin Fang Foom. Mesburne explained that Fin Fang Foom, with his charmingly eccentric history as an early Marvel monster and adversary of Iron Man, was the prime candidate to represent the dragon archetype in this Earth-centric set. Polygon had the exclusive opportunity to reveal this exciting new card.

Fin Fang Foom: A Deep Dive into His Comic Book Origins and In-Game Mechanics

Fin Fang Foom, a creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in Strange Tales #89 in October 1961. He is a Makluan, a member of an intelligent alien dragon race with shapeshifting abilities. His initial purpose was to conquer Earth, starting with ancient China. While his crew assimilated into human society, Fin Fang Foom entered a hibernation, occasionally awakening to become a legendary figure. Over time, he solidified his status as one of Iron Man's formidable foes. In Magic: The Gathering, Fin Fang Foom is a four-cost, mono-red legendary creature. This 3/5 alien dragon villain boasts flying and a powerful ability: whenever you cast an instant or sorcery targeting an artifact or land, you copy that spell, can choose new targets, and Fin Fang Foom gains two +1/+1 counters.

Translating Kaiju Power: The Design Philosophy Behind Fin Fang Foom's Card

The design of Fin Fang Foom's card directly translates his classic kaiju persona into gameplay. He is depicted as a colossal force, trampling cities, demolishing vehicles, and leaving destruction in his wake. The card's mechanics ingeniously reflect this fantasy, rewarding players who target artifacts and lands—elements in Magic: The Gathering that most closely represent buildings, vehicles, and various terrains.

Evolution of a Monster: From Concept to Card

Game design architect Dave Humpherys noted that the card's initial concept was more straightforward. He had considered a design similar to Magmatic Hellkite for Fin Fang Foom, but that was already in development. Humpherys then envisioned a card that would encourage the inclusion of other destructive spells, making Fin Fang Foom grow in power alongside the devastation he caused, starting with a lower casting cost. The design further evolved as Humpherys saw early concept art of the monster wreaking havoc in a city. This artwork inspired him to lean more into the kaiju theme, leading to the inclusion of artifacts as targets, symbolizing the flying vehicles that would fall prey to Fin Fang Foom's destructive path and expanding the card's utility in various decks.

Strategic Synergies: Integrating Fin Fang Foom into Magic: The Gathering Decks

From a gameplay perspective, Fin Fang Foom seamlessly fits into spellslinger-style Commander decks. Cards like Abrade, Shattering Spree, Rack and Ruin, Untimely Malfunction, and Fiery Confluence can all trigger his ability while simultaneously neutralizing opposing threats. This is especially potent when combined with Mycosynth Lattice, which can transform all permanent cards into artifacts. Furthermore, spells that target your own artifacts and lands can lead to surprisingly explosive turns, maximizing Fin Fang Foom's growth and impact.

Unlocking Proactive Interactions: Advanced Strategies with Fin Fang Foom

Humpherys explained that a significant aspect of Fin Fang Foom's potential lies in discovering proactive interactions, such as incidentally targeting your own lands or artifacts with cards like Applied Geometry. For example, using Applied Geometry could result in two 6/6 lands and a 5/7 flying Fin Fang Foom. While Applied Geometry from Secrets of Strixhaven would necessitate a Temur (red-green-blue) deck, players could also opt for a Gruul (red-green) strategy, drawing inspiration from the Avatar: The Last Airbender set's Earthbending mechanic to transform lands into creatures and accumulate counters.

Engineered Survival: Fin Fang Foom's Interaction with Avengers Disassembled

Humpherys highlighted a deliberate design choice that ensures Fin Fang Foom's interaction with another Marvel Super Heroes card, Avengers Disassembled. This card specifically targets lands. The team carefully engineered Fin Fang Foom's stats to ensure he survives the widespread destruction caused by copying this spell, maintaining his presence on the battlefield even after a massive clear-out.

Visual Homage: Fin Fang Foom's Design Influences and Iconic Features

Fin Fang Foom's visual design is rich with references to comic book history. Mesburne revealed that the primary inspiration for the team came from the cult-favorite series Nextwave. The artwork masterfully balances the monster's immense destructive power with the more humorous and authentic elements of his comic book origins. Mesburne pointed out a specific detail: if one looks closely at the upper part of his leg, the edge of his famous purple briefs is visible. This detail underscores that, much like the Incredible Hulk, Fin Fang Foom, despite being green and capable of demolishing cities, is always depicted by both Marvel and Wizards of the Coast as retaining at least a part of his iconic purple attire."
