Unraveling the Art Heist: A Comprehensive Guide to "Canvas the Castle" in Oblivion Remastered

Embark on a captivating mystery within the world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, where a stolen masterpiece at Chorrol Castle sets the stage for the quest, "Canvas the Castle." This detailed guide will assist you in piecing together the events of the art theft, guiding you through the interrogation of potential suspects and the discovery of hidden clues to identify the true culprit. Your investigative prowess will determine the resolution of this intriguing case, influencing the rewards you receive and the fate of those involved.

The journey begins in the Grand Hall of Castle Chorrol. Upon entering, locate Countess Arriana Valga, who can typically be found on her throne. Engage her in conversation to learn about the unfortunate disappearance of one of her cherished paintings. The Countess will commission you to retrieve her artwork, promising a substantial reward for your success.

With the investigation officially underway, you must interrogate four key individuals associated with the castle who might possess knowledge of the theft. The first suspect is Lathe Wavrick, the Countess's personal attendant, who is constantly present in the Great Hall. While he denies any involvement, he provides a valuable lead, mentioning Orgnolf's financial struggles and his habit of borrowing money. Next, seek out Orgnolf Hairy-Legs in the private quarters, located on the upper level behind the throne. This balding Breton claims he spent the night in his room, recalling only a minor, unrelated argument in the Great Hall. Chanel, a Redguard woman also residing in the private quarters, states she was in the courtyard for most of the evening before retiring to her room after a quick meal. Lastly, Orok gro-Ghoth, found in the private quarters or occasionally frequenting local shops, insists he remained indoors due to rain. However, he reveals that he has previously witnessed Orgnolf drinking in the castle's west tower—a detail that proves significant.

Despite the initial interrogations, the evidence remains inconclusive, pointing vaguely towards either Orgnolf or Chanel. To solidify your accusation, you must uncover physical evidence scattered throughout the castle. Begin your search in the Great Hall's dining area, where a "paint-stained carpet" can be found beneath a table, hinting at the thief's hasty departure. Next, venture to the castle's west tower, a location frequently mentioned by the suspects. Within the tower's lower section, you will discover an "unusual painting" concealed behind some crates. Finally, proceed to Chanel's room within the private quarters. Beneath the painting in the rear of her room, you will unveil a lectern containing a set of hidden painting supplies, definitively linking her to the crime.

Armed with compelling evidence, confront Chanel in the private quarters. She will only confess if your disposition with her is at least 70. If necessary, utilize the persuasion minigame to improve her opinion of you. Once her disposition is sufficiently high and all three clues have been found, Chanel will admit her guilt.

Once Chanel confesses, return to Countess Arriana to report your findings. The outcome of your investigation, and consequently your reward, depends on your final accusation. If you truthfully expose Chanel, the Countess will remove her from the court and compensate you with a sum of gold based on your character's level, along with valuable gemstones. Chanel will then vanish from the game. Should you mistakenly accuse Orgnolf before identifying Chanel, your reward will be a lesser amount of gold. However, if you opt to protect Chanel by informing the Countess that neither suspect is guilty, you will receive a small amount of gold, but Chanel will be so grateful that she will present you with a unique painting after three in-game weeks. This special artwork can be used to adorn your purchased home or sold for 500 gold.
