Grayscale Identifies Five Promising DeFi Altcoins with Tangible Value

In a notable shift within the cryptocurrency landscape, Grayscale Research has highlighted five decentralized finance (DeFi) tokens it believes possess genuine utility and value. This assessment underscores a broader market trend where investor focus is increasingly moving away from purely speculative assets towards those capable of generating verifiable revenue streams and cash flow.

The five tokens identified in Grayscale's recent report are Hyperliquid (HYPE), Aave (AAVE), Uniswap (UNI), Sky (SKY), and Maple (MAPLE). These selections are based on their robust fundamentals and their ability to deliver strong relative value. The firm argues that as crypto markets have evolved, particularly since early this year, tokens can now be evaluated akin to traditional financial assets rather than mere commodities. This perspective is rooted in the significant cumulative fees—nearly $25 billion since 2023—generated by DeFi protocols through various activities like exchanges, lending, staking, and derivatives. This activity has led to a compression in price multiples for DeFi lending, indicating a maturation of these business models and presenting attractive valuations.

The value of these tokens is not solely determined by protocol revenue but also by mechanisms such as token burns, buybacks, rebates, and staking that channel earnings back to holders. Uniswap and Hyperliquid exemplify this model, returning a substantial portion of their earnings to token holders through transparent DeFi payout structures. Hyperliquid, for instance, directs its trading fees directly into buying and burning HYPE tokens, a strategy that has propelled it into the top 10 by market capitalization this year. Aave, a leading DeFi lender, is also considered undervalued by Grayscale. The report also details the current market positions of these tokens: HYPE trades around $72, UNI at approximately $3.30, SKY near $0.06 due to its collateral-backed stablecoin, and Maple, which offers strong risk-adjusted returns through institutional lending.
